Keys and Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows

Enter Key
The Enter Key will act according to the specific application. For instance, in Word the Enter key will start a new line and pressed twice will start a new paragraph. In Excel it moves the cursor to the cell directly below.

Escape (ESC) Key
This key is at the top left of the keyboard. You use this key to get out of something you've just done. Pressing ESC can cancel many commands, close some windows and cancel dialog boxes.

Control (CTRL) Key
This key is used in conjunction with other keys for editing and for keyboard shortcuts within many applications.

Alternative (ALT) Key
This key acts in a similar way to the CTRL key and is used in conjunction with other keys to control your computer.

Function Keys
Across the top of your keyboard are 12 keys that are called function keys. They are named F1 through to F12. Function Keys perform different actions in different programs.

Shortcut Key
The Shortcut Key, which looks like a “List”, when pressed opens up the Shortcut Menu. This feature is the same as right-clicking to open the Shortcut Menu. It is located on the bottom row between the Ctrl Key and the Windows Key.

 

Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows

  • F1 = Starts Windows Help
  • F5 = Refreshes the current window
  • ALT+F4 = Closes the current window
  • ATL+TAB = Switch to another running program
  • ALT+underlined letter in dialog box item = Moves to the corresponding item
  • CTRL+C = Copy
  • CTRL+V - Paste
  • CTRL+X = Cut
  • CTRL+Z = Undo
  • CTRL+S = Save
  • CTRL+P = Print
  • CTRL+B = Bold
  • CTRL+I = Italic
  • CTRL+U = Underline
  • CTRL+W = Close
  • CTRL+N = New
  • CTRL+A = Selects all the items in the current window

 

Keyboard Shortcuts for Microsoft Office

  • CTRL+HOME = Takes you to the very beginning of the page
  • CTRL+END = Takes you to the very end of the page
  • CTRL+ENTER = Inserts new page (Word)
  • F5 = Go to
  • SHIFT+arrow keys = highlights

 

Microsoft Natural Keyboard Keys

The Windows Key, which looks like the Microsoft Logo, when pressed opens the Start Menu. It is located on the bottom row of the keyboard on both sides of the space bar.

  • Windows Logo = Start menu
  • Windows Logo+L Logoff
  • Windows Logo+F1 = Help
  • Windows Logo+E = Windows Explorer
  • Windows Logo+F = Find files or folders
  • Windows Logo+M = Minimize all
  • Shift+Windows Logo+M = Undo minimize all
  • Application key = Displays a shortcut menu for the selected item
