The Internet
The Internet, what a wonderful place! The Internet
is full of games and information on everything you could possible imagine.
Actually the Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers.
The Internet is the world’s largest information highway connected
by wires, cables, and signals through wireless technology.
The World Wide Web is the collection of websites worldwide. These
websites are the actual places you visit and the Internet is the highway
you use to get there. You must know the difference, but considering
that the majority of the world combines the two – we will use
the term “The Internet”.
The Internet is like fire, if harnessed properly you can cook with
it and heat your home with it. If fire is let to run its own course,
it will burn down your house and anything else that gets in its path.
When using fire you must be made aware of the dangers and the benefits.
When using the Internet you must be made aware of the dangers and the
benefits. This course will teach you how to harness the Internet to
receive the benefits; and the dangers of the Internet and how to protect
yourself. This course will also teach you what your responsibilities
are when using a computer at school and at home.
Internet Security
The computer lab has its own network consisting of
24 student computers, 1 instructor computer, and a server. This network
sits behind a firewall, is filtered, and monitored by the technology
teacher using SynchronEyesClassroom Management Software. Trinity Chapel
Academy has a Technology Ethics and Use Policy in
place that all students must abide by and all students have signed
a Technology Ethics and Internet Use
Pledge. These policies and filters
do a great job but, cannot prevent all risks to students because the
Internet is a constantly changing technology. Our children must be
taught how to handle an “Uncomfortable” situation
if one arises at school or at home.
Beginning
with the 2007-2008 school year, TCA will teach safety and responsibility
to all grade levels K through 8 using CyberSmart Curriculum, a highly
acclaimed curriculum which was originally co-published with Macmillian/McGraw-Hill.
This course is taught in age specific units and is available online http://www.cybersmart.org.
The responsibility does not stop in the classroom, but extends to the
home. All students will be asked to sign a “Kid’s Pledge” and
all parents will be asked to sign a “Parents’ Pledge”.
The Internet allows students to communicate with people around the
world and they need to know that not everyone is who they say they
are.
